Somehow, I think the poem got right to the heart of it all:
Some live by “Love thy neighbor as thy self.”
Others by first do no harm, or take no more than you need.
What if the mightiest word is love, love beyond marital, filial, national. Love that casts a widening pool of light. Love with no need to preempt grievance.
In today’s sharp sparkle, this winter air, anything can be made, any sentence begun.
- Elizabeth Alexander
And video of the reading (I highly recommend viewing this. It’s short and worth your time!)

What a great idea to gather these memorable Obama inspired images on inauguration day. I’ll have to check them out.

Yesterday. It was a good day.
Thanks for the links…I had heard an interview with E. Alexander about her poem on NPR this past weekend and was anxious to hear it. But was in the field yesterday morning and missed all the real-time festivities.

Thanks for the link – I watched most of the inauguration ceremony, but missed this part. I must say, from this side of the pond it feels great not to have Dubya hanging over us any more.

Mel–I subscribe to an interesting site called The Big Picture. Not sure if you have heard of it, but a couple times a week, they post photo sets on a certain topic. Of course, this week was the inauguration. It’s incredibly moving to see just who was riveted to the screen, watching the ceremony. When it popped up on my reader, I immediately thought the link would be of interest to you and Tad if you hadn’t seen it.
