Geez--I could have sworn I made a comment about these socks before I left. I hate that the knitting experience with this particular yarn wasn't enjoyable...but you really do have a gorgeous pair of socks to show for it.

Out of curiosity, how do the socks feel on the feet? I know you wonder about wear and such, but are they comfortable?

These are gorgeous! - and you are ahead of me. I set my Mystery Socks aside last October when I had a miscrossed cable (or two, or three) (in very dark yarn!) and haven't yet picked them back up.

I don't have any answers on the perfect sock yarn. I like Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock (but it's not a small maker, obvs). I really enjoyed knitting with HazelKnits recently, but I haven't made socks with it yet (I made Ishbel with it). I made some socks I really really love not long ago out of yarn from Unique Sheep - a North Carolina-based indie dye-er. The yarn I used was Verve, a superwash, and it has held up really well so far.

The socks are beautiful - great pattern. I've met many a sock yarn that I dislike, too, including Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sport. *Gasp!* Blasphemy, I know. I think the heartier ones are less fun to knit with. My favorites are well-known - Koigu and Cherry Tree Hill Merino Sock. Very much like the sock yarns you like. Stick with what works - no harm there! I am drooling over your Golding Spindle below. It's amazingly beautiful.

They do look lovely though...

As far as yarn goes, I don't wear my socks to death, so don't need yarn to be too sturdy. My son, though, can wear a pair out in a couple of months, and I've not yet found a pure wool that lasts for him.

I am a superwash snob - I won't buy it. Even for socks. I'll be happy to wash my nice, regular wool by hand! I also don't knit a ton of socks....

Ahhh - the elusive search for that perfect sock yarn :-)
The only 2 pairs of socks that have ever worn through for me were Koigu (lost 2 pairs) and Knit Picks Gloss (silk/wool) - otherwise they've all been durable.
I love Lorna's Laces, but it is not the "small maker" you're looking for. I also recently enjoyed Woolen Rabbit Harmony which might fit your criteria a little better. I made another pair recently with Ariquipa a superwash/alpaca/nylon blend which was nice yarn.
Just keep trying new yarns....eventually you'll find the perfect one for you!

Oh I almost forgot...your Mystery socks are beautiful :-)

This question of the ultimate sock blend comes up a lot on spinning groups. Some people swear by adding a little mohair or silk -- and of course choosing an appropriate wool breed in the first place, which maybe isn't merino.

Very pretty socks. Sorry to hear about the yarn experience, but reading your comment about the blend being 'splitty and uncomfortable' made me laugh because I was just reading a study for work that discusses material loss (splitting & pilling) in poly/cotton sheets due to friction between the different fibers (www.autexrj.org/No1/old1_2.pdf - page 4, textile durability).

I like your writing a lot better.

Love,
Your eco-geek brother
