The Breast Cancer 3Day 2009

Posted on | October 4, 2009 | 11 Comments

Update! My WordPress tells me that I put up this post only 14 hours ago. And several of you have donated already. You blow me away with your generosity, people! There will be a gift certificate drawing at least – give me 24 hours or so to settle on the details. I don’t know how else to say it – THANK YOU.

Update #2! The skinny. I’ll keep this open for donations through Monday, October 12 when we return home. Up for grabs? A $40 gift certificate to One Planet Yarn and Fiber (why One Planet? I’m a fan.) You all have donated $300 of my total amount as of this evening – You rock my world!

Update #3! Dear Gryphon and Sarah have offered up not one, but two skeins of their prized Sanguine Gryphon Bugga! yarn for two other winners – Colorways TBD from their perennial collection. Please spread the word y’all, I know you want one of these!! Think we can turn that $300 into $500 or more?

Update #4! Whoooooosh! it’s Wednesday (10/14 – after the event!) How’d that happen? I’ve decided to keep the raffle open for another week or so, to give me time to properly introduce the prizes, and allow for donations from a few more folks who’ve expressed an interest… So, we’ll call 10/25 the end date – I’ll draw on 10/26, and expect a real post from me in the next day or two with prize photos, etc.

Soooo….

There’s this thing that I do every year. If you’ve been reading for awhile, you may already be aware of it (and you may have generously supported me in the past!) I haven’t posted about it this year for many reasons, mostly the state of the world economy, and the fact that despite the great need for funding, due to Komen for the Cure, my cause traditionally benefits from a good deal more attention than many other equally devastating diseases. There is also the fact that there was not time to run a raffle this year and I felt a little uncomfortable posting without offering you all some incentive/thank you gifts after last years efforts were so kindly supported by you all.

There’s a little something else too. I had a bit of a scare earlier this year (Ok… It shook me up good actually). I am fine, and am incredibly fortunate to be under the watchful eye of an expert in the field. I’ve been enrolled in a couple of clinical trials that I feel are beneficial, and which will hopefully give me a better idea of what my own risk for breast cancer may be, so that I can explore preventative options if that level of risk turns out to be more than I’m comfortable with. Which means that now I am also directly benefiting from the funds that we raise, even though I have not been afflicted with the disease. And while I feel SO grateful for that opportunity, it seems like EVERYONE should have this option, if they want it. And every person who is diagnosed should have the same access to treatment and care, and should not have to be afraid that the course of their disease will outrun the available options. I realize that there is always a balancing act between funds designated for research and development of life saving treatments/a potential cure, and those that go toward diagnosis and prevention. There are so many causes in need of funding, and so many areas within every one that call for attention. It’s a dilemma.

So I’ll put this out there, in case any of you are able to help Tad and I with our fundraising. I realize that this year may be tougher, and I appreciate any help that you may be able to offer. If a few of you are able to donate, I’ll get together a gift certificate to an online yarn shop and draw names, what do you say?

We start walking our 60 miles this Friday morning, bright and early. I’ll be carrying the names of ALL of our friends and loved ones from each year past. I’ll have my game face on.

Thanks for reading.
